Looking After Your
Lawn
For your lawn to survive winter, we advise cutting your grass
short and removing any leaves or debris. A mistake many people tend to make, is
leaving these to compost under any potential snow. In fact, this can cause
mould or even fungal disease should it be left through winter.
Something we recommend is applying a winterising fertiliser to
your lawn in preparation. What helps this process is the autumn dew that is on
your lawn. This helps absorb it faster. By doing this process it encourages
your grass to grow more stamina to survive.
Protecting Your
Shrubs Wrapping
your delicate shrubs and hedges will help them stay protected against heavy
wind and snow. By using a breathable material like burlap, you not only keep
them protected but make sure they don’t get smothered.
Another great tip we recommend is installing temporary snow
fencing. This is to counter snow drifts getting on the bottom of your bushes.
This will provide a barrier for your landscaping from any blowing snow.
Take Care Of Your
Trees
Ensuring that
your trees are well watered throughout autumn is a brilliant way to prepare
your trees for the colder months. By doing this, it will help the roots stay
strong and the soil drying out throughout winter.
Although snow at the base of your tree helps keep it
insulated, it’s important to remember this doesn’t guarantee consistency. Try
adding mulch to the base; this moderates soil temperature allowing the soil to
stay moist. It also prevents the roots from freezing.
General Maintenance
Keeping on top of not only your plants, but
everything else will benefit you in the long run. Making sure outdoor
containers are empty will keep them from cracking during winter. Also remember
to store this upside down. Scrub and pack away your tools. This will stop any
potential rust; some people like to cover their tools in vegetable oil.If you house a compost pile within your garden, cover it
with a thick layer before any snow fall. This well help stop any potential
damage to your compost. One thing many people forget during winter, is to empty
the fuel tanks on their power equipment. Many items of equipment should have
winter maintenance sections in their manuals.
